Christmas Day Eucharist Service
Christmas Day is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, is celebrated by the vast majority of Christians.
"Christmas" is a shortened form of "Christ" and "Mass". It is derived from the Middle English Cristemasse, which is from Old English Crīstesmæsse, a phrase first recorded in 1038 followed by the word Cristes-messe in 1131. Crīst (genitive Crīstes) is from Greek Khrīstos (Χριστός), a translation of Hebrew Māšîaḥ (מָשִׁיחַ), "Messiah", meaning "anointed"; and mæsse is from Latin missa, the celebration of the Eucharist. The form Christenmas was also historically used, but is now considered archaic and dialectal; it derives from Middle English Cristenmasse, literally "Christian mass". Xmas is an abbreviation of Christmas found particularly in print, based on the initial letter chi (Χ) in Greek Khrīstos (Χριστός), "Christ", though numerous style guides discourage its use; it has precedent in Middle English Χρ̄es masse (where "Χρ̄" is an abbreviation for Χριστός).
God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets." (Hebrews 1:1)
Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself pruged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high."
我們聚集一起,崇拜上帝,是要見證這位我們一直仰望拯救世界的「道」── "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth." (John 1:14)。
"Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men." (Luke 2:14)

Christingle
The history of the Christingle can be traced back to John de Watteville, who started the tradition in the Moravian congregation of Marienborn, Germany, on 20th December, 1747. At a children's service, hymns were sung and the minister, John de Watteville, read verses which the children had written to celebrate the birth of Jesus. He then explained to the children the happiness that had come to people through Jesus, "who has kindled in each little heart a flame which keeps burning to their joy and our happiness'. To make the point even clearer, each child then received a little lighted wax candle, tied round with a red ribbon. The minister ended the service with this prayer, "Lord Jesus, kindle a flame in these children's hearts, that theirs like Thine become". The Marienborn Diary concludes, "hereupon the children went full of joy with their lighted candles to their rooms and so went glad and happy to bed".
Christingle means "Christ Light" and is used to celebrate Jesus Christ as the "Light of the World". No one knows for certain when the word "Christingle" was first used or from what it is derived. Various suggestions have been made. One is that it comes from the old Saxon word "ingle" (fire), meaning "Christ-fire or light". Another is that it derives from the German "engel" (angel), meaning "Christ-angel", or it may derive from the German "kindle" (child), meaning "Christ-child".
The symbolism gradually developed, the Christingle consists of:
An orange, representing the world;
A candle pushed into the centre of the orange, then lit, representing Jesus Christ as Light of the World;
A red ribbon wrapped around the orange or a paper frill around the candle, representing the blood of Christ shed for all people on the cross at Calvary;
Dried fruits and/or sweets skewered on cocktail sticks pushed into the orange, representing God's bounty and goodness in providing the fruits of the earth and the four seasons.
The Christingle Service is usually held on the Sunday before Christmas or on Christmas Eve. Essentially, it is a children's service, which reminds us that the Christ-child lies at the heart of our Christmas celebrations. The service usually includes the traditional Moravian carol:
At the climax of the service every child receives the gift of a Christingle, reminding us that "God so loved the world that he gave his only Son..." (John 3:16). In this wonderful moment, in the darkened church, the visual symbol of the Christingle expresses the truth that in the darkness of the world there shines a great light.

Night
This is my first time follow with others strange volunteer to sing noels in this night. We're singing in three different area in Shamshuipo district. The last area where is the homeless people who live under the bridge. We give them christmas gifts besides sing noels.
Midnight Mass of the Nativity
At the midnight, I go back to cathedral and attend the Midnight Eucharist Mass.

Far excels the sun's clear light:
Jesus be Constantly,
More than thousand suns to me.
Thy glad beams, thou morning star,
Cheer the nations near and far;
Thee we own Lord alone,
Man's great Saviour, God's dear S.
Morning Star, my soul's true light,
Tarry not, dispel my night;
Jesus mine, In me shine;
Fill my heart with the light divine.

The Fourth Sunday of Advent
18 dicembre 2016, domenica
Morning
The last Sunday of Advent, so surprise to me in this morning.
The pianist absent in the Service;
Just only one chorist stay for practice after Service, most of others are absent without ask for leave.
Afternoon
I go to attend my friend's wedding ceremony.
The place is holding at University Chapel. There is a lovely place. A moment of the groom uncover the bridal veil, the best man and the bridesmaid will open the back of the Cross curtains then let sunlight shine in the chapel.
Maylyn and Peter, congratulations. May God's love be with both of you always.
Night
After the wedding ceremony, I hurry up go to attend a Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at St. John Cathedral. This is a very far away from University at New Territories to Hong Kong Island. There is almost full house and just started the Service while I arrive.
I'm so shame of my bad cough disturb the service. But God takes care of me, HE arrange two angels sit by my side and help me cool down.
After the Service, Cathedral set up a mini reception at the garden and let everyone have a gathering.
The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols
The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is an important service in Anglican churches of Christian worship celebrating the birth of Jesus that is traditionally followed at Christmas.
The service was created and performed in 1880 by Edward White Benson, who was the then newly appointed Bishop of Truro, Cornwall (later became the Archbishop of Canterbury).
A service of Nine Lessons and Carols has nine Bible readings (or lessons) from Genesis, the prophetic books and the Gospels that tell the story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus, interspersed with the singing of Christmas carols hymns and choir music. The order of the lessons was revised in 1919, and since that time the service has always begun with the hymn "Once in Royal David's City". The first verse is sung unaccompanied by a solo boy chorister.

The Third Sunday of Advent
11 dicembre 2016, domenica
Today is the third Sunday of Advent, we light the rose-colored candle of Joy.
Blue Christmas
Brightly wrapped packages, Christmas trees, holiday parties, holly and the scent of pine, unending upbeat carols in shops and malls, visits from friends and family, baking and cooking, food everywhere--and the awed, hushed joy of welcoming a tiny Infant to our world and our hearts--these are the images and memories of Christmas most of us celebrate and treasure.
But each year some people--the grieving, the lonely, those without hope--dread the approach of the holiday season. They have no heart for the cheer and the bustle, the anticipation and the excitement.
Blue Christmas services speak to the hurts and emptiness of losses sensed even more keenly at a holiday.
Blue Christmas services offer a meaningful time of comfort and inspiration, compassion and prayer.
This time of year can bring back memories of past pain and sorrow. It highlights and heightens new experiences of suffering. For many this time of year, that we call the holiday season, is no holiday at all. It is filled with difficult times, humps to get over, gatherings to endure, varieties of pressures and a flood of memories that darken and dampen the days. This service will allow for some time to recognize that this season is not a joy for everyone. When others are going "merrily along" many of us would rather the season just go away.
In this service, we will be given a chance to sing and to pray. We will be invited to offer up the pain, the loneliness, the sad and dark memories, and the anxiety and fear to the one whose birth we eagerly await...Jesus Christ. We pray that you will find hope and peace in this service and comfort in knowing that you are not alone.
(Quoted from Blue Christmas Service programme notes, St. John Cathedral)
Tonight, I light this candles to remember my grandpa, grandma and mama.
"In the rising of the sun and in its going down, we remember them.
In the glowing of the wind and in the chill of winter, we remember them.
In the opening of buds and in the rebirth of spring, we remember them.
In the blueness of the sky and in the warmth of summer, we remember them.
In the rustling of leaves and in the beauty of autumn, we remember them.
In the beginning of the year and when it ends, we remember them.
When we are weary and in need of strength, we remember them.
When we are lost and sick at heart, we remember them.
When we have joys we yearn to share, we remember them.
So long as we live, they too shall live,
for they are now a part of us, as we remember them."

Adventus
27 novembre 2016, domenica
Advent marks the beginning of the liturgical calendar. This is a season for reflection and anticipation. Unlike the secular calendar, this new church year isn't a time for celebration in itself but there is a real sense of hope and expectation. As disciples of the Lord, we wait with expectancy, and prepare our hearts with joy, so that, as we look forward to the coming celebration of Christ's incarnation, we also think about his second glorious coming. We embrace the call that the Lord is bestowing upon us.
We do not wait without hope, because the Lord has already promised us the final victory, and, through the incarnated Lord, let us enjoy the fruit of salvation. Therefore, we do not wait in vain, but with the knowledge that by his victory over death, we await the fulfillment of the Lord's will every day, and live our lives with hope.
Hence, our life is like that of a woman who is expecting a child, indeed like the Virgin Mary who waited with joy as she was expecting the birth of Jesus. We too should equip ourselves, bear Christ joyfully in our hearts, closely connect our faith with our daily lives, and let our inner Christ grow day by day!
Today is the first Sunday of Advent, we light the candle of hope.
P.S.:
I'm glad to receive the present from God. In the seminar, I met one of the choir conductors who conducted the institute choir which I studied. He sits besides me and praise my beautiful voice after he listens while I am singing the congregation hymn. Give thanks.

Carol Service
26 novembre 2016, sabato
Tomorrow is the first Sunday of Advent.
So we have the Advent Carol Service in Cathedral.
"O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel,
that mourns in lonely exile here until the Son of God appear:
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel."
After the Officiant introduces the service and says the Bidding Prayer, we sing the hymn "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" and start the Service. In the Service, Cathedral invited the Chamber Choir and Chamber Orchestra to come and perform the "Messiah, part 1" (excerpt) in the Service. At last, we sing the hymn "Lo, He Comes with Clouds Descending" before The Blessing.
Perhaps rehearsal time overrun, the organ prelude is cancelled. But Chamber Orchestra play "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, BWV 645" by Johann Sebastian Bach for postlude.
Although the day is not good, rainy whole day, but the Carol Service is very wonderful.

Today is last Thursday of November, also called Thanksgiving Day. From Wikipedia, this is a national holiday celebrated in Canada, United States and some of the Caribbean Island, but not in Hong Kong.
Even though this is not national holiday in Hong Kong, many family will celebrate the day.
In this year, my family have a reason celebrate the thanksgiving day because also is my father's birthday.
Happy birthday to my father.
Happy thanksgiving day.

This is the day before Christ the King Sunday ("Feast of Christ the King" or Sunday before The First Sunday of Advent).
I think this is the busy day.
This is the carnival of my graduated secondary, but I cannot join with them.
This is my dearest friends's birthday, at least 7 who I know. Sorry I cannot celebrate with yours, so I just say happy birthday to all of you.
This is the carnival of fire station, I had been the volunteer at last year. Sorry I cannot help to them this year.
This is one of the broadcast company 50 years anniversary, but I didn't watch their Live TV show.
This is many concert or Service on will sing "Messiah" to prepare the Christ the King Sunday, but I can't go to join.
WHY?
Because I will sing "Elijah" (excerpt) with Sunshine Chorus and Hong Kong Chinese Oratorio Society at Tsim Sha Tsui Baptist Church tonight.

It's seem to be a little rush in this afternoon.
The first, I help my dad to move some rubbish papers and expired magazines to recycle shop.
The second, take my broken hard disk to change new one.
The third, go to visit the traditional Chinese doctor and treat my kneel by acupuncture and moxibustion.
Done those above three things, I have relax time. Then I go to market and buy some vegetables for my dinner. One of the seafood shop attract me. Wow, a plate of Hemifussus tuba just only $10.
Following, I wash and clean these shells, then cook them.
This is my dinner at last.
Um... delicious!

Be Not Dismayed
5 octobre 2016, mercoledi
One of the hymns which I love and teach the elders to sing it today.
BE NOT DISMAYED (GOD WILL TAKE CARE OF YOU)
Music by Walter Stillman Martin (1862-1935)
Lyrics by Civilla Durfee Martin (1866-1948)
1 Be not dismayed whate’er betide, God will take care of you!
Beneath His wings of love abide, God will take care of you! *Refrain
2 Through days of toil when heart doth fail, God will take care of you!
When dangers fierce your path assail, God will take care of you! *Refrain
3 All you may need He will provide, God will take care of you!
Trust Him, and you will be satisfied, God will take care of you! *Refrain
4 Lonely and sad, from friends apart, God will take care of you!
He will give peace to your aching heart, God will take care of you! *Refrain
5 No matter what may be the test, God will take care of you!
Lean, weary one, upon His breast, God will take care of you! *Refrain

Easter Vigil
26 marzo 2016, sabato santo
I joined the Holy week Service in this 3 days, from Maundy Thursday, then the Good Friday to Easter Vigil. From "not to be served but to serve", then "The sinless Son of God was slain on Calvary's hill" to "He arose from death to life triumphantly". It's amazing, for salvation, He did for me.
For Easter day, Cathedral arranged some people to decorate the hall. They set much of flowers for decoration, the fragrance fulfill the hall.
This is 3 parts mainly in Service. First part is the Service of Light - blessing of new fire. Second part is baptism. Third part is the Holy Eucharist.
In Holy Eucharist, Cathedral choir sing a dedicated hymn "Because of Love" which is my favorite hymn to sing.
"Because of Love"
Music by Lanny Allen
Words by J. Paul Williams
Why would God come to earth?
Why would He choose a manger birth?
Why would He want to give me worth?
Why would God come to earth?
Because of love, because of love.
He left the peace of heav'n above.
He left His throne His Majesty and came to earth to ransom me.
Because of love, because of love, because of love.
Why would God choose Calvary?
Why would He suffer on a tree?
Why would He die for you and me?
Why would God choose Calvary?
Because of love.
For God so love the world, He gave His only begotten son.
That whosoever believeth, believeth in Him should not perish.
But have everlasting life.
He came to live in flesh and do His Father's will.
The sinless Son of God was slain on Calvary's hill.
But He arose from death to life triumphantly.
All this and mourn, Christ did for me.
Because of love, because of love,
He left the peace of heav'n above.
He left His throne His Majesty and came to earth to ransom me.
Because of love, because of love.
Because God so love.
I'm glad to witness more 70 babies, children and adults becoming Christian through baptist.

The Good Friday
25 marzo 2016, venerdi santo
The Good Friday, the cathedral choir sing 3 dedicated hymns while the Service in the process the Veneration of the Cross.
"When You Prayed Beneath the Trees"
Music by Lloyd Larson
Words by Christopher Idle
When you prayed beneath the trees, it was for me, O Lord;
when you cried upon your knees, how could it be, O Lord?
When in blood and sweat and tears, you dismissed your final fears,
when you faced the soldiers' spears, you stood for me, O Lord.
When their triumph looked complete, it was for me, O Lord;
when it seemed like your defeat, they could not see, O Lord!
When you faced the mob alone you were silent as a stone,
and a tree became your throne; you came for me, O Lord.
When you stumbled up the road, you walked for me, O Lord;
when you took your deadly load, that heavy tree, O Lord;
When they lifted you on high, and they nailed you up to die,
and when darkness filled the sky, it was for me, O Lord.
"God So Loved The World"
Music by John Stainer
Word from John 3:16
God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son,
that who so believeth, believeth in Him should not perish,
but have everlasting life.
For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world,
but that the world through him might be saved.
"The Cross: When I Survey / Wonderful Cross"
Music and Words by Chris Tomlin, Jesse Reeves and J.D. Walt
includes When I Survey by Isaac Walts and Lowell Mason
Arranged by Larry Shackley
When I survey the wondrous cross, on which the Prince of Glory died,
my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride.
Oh, the wonderful cross, oh, the wonderful cross,
bids me come and die and find that I can truly live.
Oh, the wonderful cross, oh, the wonderful cross,
all who gather here by grace draw near and bless your name.
See from his head, his hands, his feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down.
Did e'er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose, so rich a crown?
Oh, the wonderful cross, oh, the wonderful cross,
all who gather here by grace draw near and bless your name.
Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.
Amen.

Today, I be the chorus to join the Service in Cathedral.
When Reverends washing of the feet to baptist-to-be like as Jesus performing this act, the choir sing the dedicated hymn "The Servant King", let us to remember "Not to be served but to serve".
THE SERVANT KING
music & lyrics: Graham Kendrick
1. From heav'n you came, helpless Babe, entered our world, Your glory veiled;
not to be served but to serve, and give Your life that we might live. (refrain)
2. There in the garden of tears, my heavy load He chose to bear,
His heart with sorrow was torn, 'Yet not my will but Your.' He said. (refrain)
3. Come see His hands and His feet, the scars that speak of sacrifice,
hands that flung stars into space to cruel nails surrendered. (refrain)
4. So let us learn how to serve, and in our lives enthrone Him,
each other's needs to prefer, for it is Christ we're serving. (refrain)
Refrain:
This is our God, the Servant King. He calls us now to follow Him,
to bring our lives as a daily offering of worship to the Servant King.
This year, Cathedral set up the garden of Gethsemane in the hall for public to pray and wait the Lord overnight. Thanks to God, we have some talent sisters to build up this beautiful garden to pray like as Jesus.
